The northern parts of India are humid and tropical while the western sections are rainy. There is a small section in the center of the country that is dry and arid. Although most of India is very hot, there are mountainous areas that can get extremely cold. India has four distinct seasons with summer between March and June. How do I get Around India?
India has a national rail network that reaches almost the entire country. The only exceptions are mountainous areas. The entire system seems chaotic, but it actually runs very well. Trains are commonly late, even by several hours, but if you made a reservation weeks ago, you would find it pated on the side of the train carriage when it does arrive. It can take 12 hours or more to reach your destination and if you plan to sleep on the train, be sure to padlock your belongings to the bunk with the chain provided. There are some luxury tourist trains available, but they are very expensive. If you need to travel long distances quickly, it is better to travel by air. In areas not covered by trains, buses are often available, but be prepared to ride not only with people but also livestock if you choose a government operated bus. Car rentals are available, but they often include a driver.
